남대문극장은 1959년 남대문시장에 문을 연 옛 극장의 이름과 장소를 이어받은 공간이다. 시장 초입의 한 동짜리 건물에서, 당시에는 주로 비주류 영화와 검열된 영화들을 상영했다. 한동안 쓰임을 잃었던 건물은 2026년 리모델링을 거쳐 전시실, 티룸, 카페, 독립서점을 갖춘 공간이 되었다. 옛 건물의 정취를 가진 높은 층고와 서울 중구의 거리가 내려다보이는 창을 지녔다. 유연한 상영관처럼 동시대의 이야기를 보여주되, 여전히 극장처럼 일정 기간마다 새로운 기획을 소개한다.

Namdaemun Theater takes its name from the movie theater that opened in Namdaemun Market in 1959 and occupies the same site. Housed in a single building at the entrance to the market, the theater mainly screened non-mainstream and censored films. After a period of disuse, the building was renovated in 2026 to house exhibition galleries, a tea room, a café, and an independent bookstore. The character of the old building lingers in its high ceilings, while its windows overlook the streets of Jung-gu, Seoul. It presents contemporary stories in a flexible setting and continues to introduce new programs at regular intervals, as a theater does.
